I believe that my clothes can give people a better image of themselves – that it can increase their feelings of confidence and happiness.
-Giorgio Armani
“I feel so frumpy at work,” Leanne said. “I don’t take the time to dress up anymore.”
“Why don’t you take the time,” I asked.
At that moment, I looked down at my flannel pajamas, noticed my coffee breath and looked at the clock.
Noon.
That was my little epiphany. My chic awakening. My call to play bigger in my business.
My clue to take the time to look and feel my best regardless of whether I’m sitting at home on the phone coaching or walking the streets of Paris.
That was six months ago.
I’m not surprised that my coaching practice has grown tremendously since I stopped wearing my PJ’s to work.
Everything is energy. Now, when I encourage women to look and feel fabulous, my energy is in alignment. I feel authentic, not like the man behind the curtain with coffee breath and last night’s crust in his eyes.
If you are a work-from-home entrepreneur or stay-at-home mom, and you love hanging out in your pajamas until dinner, and you feel fabulous doing it, I say, “Rock ON!”
However, I discovered that I was using it as an excuse to be lazy, to slack off.
I was hanging my head in shame when the UPS man would bust me at 2 o’clock in the afternoon, still wrapped up in my robe, looking like I had the flu.
Remember, the way you do one thing is the way you do everything.
Treat everything as if it matters, because it does.
It doesn’t matter if you are cleaning your toilets or talking to a boardroom of top executives, take the time to do it with pride and passion.
Personally, I want to rule my own little world with style and passion, and world rulers (think Obama, Queen Elizabeth, and Sarkozy) are probably not hanging out in their PJ’s until noon.
I wear cute skirts and floral tops. I might wear my favorite scarf. I spritz my favorite perfume. I wear heels. I pretend that Oprah might knock on my door at any moment, but it’s usually the UPS man with an Amazon delivery.

When you take the time to look and feel your best, regardless of who’s watching, magical things begin to happen.
My clients lose weight.
Women begin attracting men.
Men begin attracting women.
Employees create opportunities.
My business grew.
So, here are some questions to ponder:
If you were running a million dollar company, would you wear your pajamas all day?
If you were going to run into Mr. Fabulous, would you be sporting your moo-moo?
Mais Non!
The moral of this story: Whatever you do in life, DO it. I mean, really do it.
Fully engage.
Shower.
Brush your teeth.
Dress.
And, in the famous words of Yves Saint Laurent, “Passion is the best makeup.”
I’m just sayin.

Totally busted me! I was in my pajamas all day yesterday working away….
So true! I dress for work everyday, just down the hall from my bedroom. A little lip gloss and fragrance goes along way.
Dang! you busted me too!
I think I’ll go get dressed now!
fabulous post!! i’m going to pay attention to the difference in energy according to my attire… i always think about it when going “out” into the world… i also love designating about one day a week as PJ day. i alternate working from home and working with the public. hmmmm. lots to ponder here. thanks!
The dogs make me get dressed first thing in the morning. And since I won’t stop after I take them out, the first thing I do is shower and makeup. Then dogs. So I guess the dogs should get an extra treat tonight!
Wow, Tonya you’ve so hit the nail on the head! I’ve had a fashionista friend helping me with my wardrobe. It’s made all the difference in the world.
Tu as raison! My schedule doesn’t allow me to lounge in pj’s Monday-Friday, but I sure can on the week-ends, sometimes. However, soon my schedule will change radically as will be a FULL-time business owner in about a month. So I will keep this in mind. It’s like when college students come to class in their pajamas, they’re dressed, but not really. Merci et a bientot!
I’m 76 and just recovering from 6 weeks in bed with “Shingles”. I couldn’t wait for the day I could get up, dressed in casual clothes with my hair combed and looking “good”. When it finally came a few days ago, I felt marvelous, energetic and ready for anything. Your wise counsel applies to and “older” guy like me as well younger women. It applies to everyone. It’s great advice. Thank You!
Oh, by the way – I lost over 25 lbs over that 6 weeks, but it was a VERY painful way to lose weight. My challenge now is to keep it off!
Michelle and Elaine – I’ve been busted by the UPS man on many occasions, so it’s OK.
Glenda- LOVE me some fashionista friends. When a woman looks fabulous, she begins to step her act up a notch.
And Michael- I am SO glad that you are recovering. And yes, this advice applies to everyone, even the guys. Everything is energy! Take really good care of yourself. Your body needs it, especially now.
Beautiful post and so true!! You create the energy you put into your day and it is so important to live the life and BE the person you desire to be and enjoy and embrace it! Thanks for posting this deliciously yummy blog post.
Oh man you must be psychic! I am rocking the pink negligee but the chicken hair and bare feet not so much. Thanks for the reminder!
Better late then never: I have only just found you and this post (thanks to a recommendation from a friend) and you are so right.
So right that starting on Monday (letting myself off at 3pm on Friday, when Andy Murray is about to start his Wimbledon semi final match!) I am going to make an extra effort; it might start tongues wagging on the school run but I am sure once I sit down to work it will be worth it! Thank you for a wonderfully written and insightful post. I’ll be back to read more!
Hi Nicola-
